Karin Hodgin Jones

Lecturer of New Media

Karin Hodgin Jones is an artist, urban planner, and researcher whose work spans multiple fields of practice. Since receiving her BFA in intermedia art in 2004, she has exhibited kinetic sculptural work and performed in a wide range of venues including Links Hall, Chicago, Illinois; the Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, Missouri; Gallery Rajatila, Tampere, Finland; the Bring to Light Festival, Brooklyn, New York; and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Salt Lake City, Utah. She has also co-designed and hosted the multivenue symposium Rounder / Kieriteliaja, Lauttta Klatch. The event was held floating on a raft in the center of Lake Parila; in a sauna in the forest of Haukijärvi, Finland; and in a gallery in Tampere, Finland.

Since 2014, her research in the regional planning field has focused on rural and urban e-waste management policies and practices in India, the United States, and the European Union. In 2016, she developed and delivered the analysis and policy proposal "Estimating E-scrap in Illinois Counties for Improved Collection Strategies for the State" to the Illinois Counties Solid Waste Management Association. She has given guest lectures on developing institutional e-waste policy for museums, libraries, and archives since presenting her collaborative research into server space requirements and e-waste mitigation at the 2015 Symposium on LIS Education.

Her current research focuses on making visible and comprehensible the scale of Internet infrastructure and environmental impacts of the World Wide Web by examining the system from mining, manufacture, and active use to end-of-life management of the devices that connect with and distribute content via the Internet backbone. Her online summer course ART 208 Digital Art and Sustainability examines those questions from a studio art context.

She is currently a lecturer of new media in the School of Art + Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She teaches Time Arts I, Interaction I, and Interaction II.
