Indigo Rodríguez bridges creative writing and visual art into a composite practice, taking his own installation-based approach to visual memoir. Working primarily in lithography and oil painting, he explores perceptions of poverty and abuse. His work elevates artifacts and interiors in disrepair into the realm of fine art, both questioning and challenging what is found worthy of artistic attention. With “eyesores” as his recent focus, he invites viewers to confront vulnerability and discomfort. He is interested in exploring the separation of frameworks such as poverty and queer identity — and how said separation contributes to normative assumptions about lived experience rooted in a dominant culture.
