    Taekyeom Lee received a 2023 Design Incubation Communication Design Award in Scholarship: Creative Production with his entry, "Tangible Graphic Design."     John Avila's firm recently joined The Change Agencies. Avila graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design in 1984. He has been professionally affiliated with the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and STA (Society of Typographic Arts) in the past and often juries the International ARC Awards in New York. With a passion for typography, John also designs and prints artwork on letterpress with antique wood fonts. He is an avid runner and is on the Board of Directors for Proud to Run and Frontrunners Chicago.     Associate Professor of Graphic Design Eric Benson and UIUC 2021 MFA alumna E. Ainsley received a grant supported by the Arts Midwest GIG Fund, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from the University of Illinois. Their project titled "Papermaking Community Workshops: Storytelling, Transformation, and Therapy" will offer papermaking workshops focused on rebirth and transformation for the LGBTQ+ communities, W.I.N. recovery (Women in Need), and the general Champaign-Urbana community. Join us to open Black on Black on Black on Black, a collaborative exhibition by faculty artists Patrick Earl Hammie, Stacey Robinson, Blair Ebony Smith, and Nekita Thomas. Black on Black on Black on Black will open to the public at 4pm, preceded by a day of events celebrating Black creativity through writing, music, and art. Starting at noon | Krannert Art Museum, the School of Art & Design, and the Pygmalion Festival, including food by The Stuft Bird food truck and activities for all ages. 12:30 pm | Live, outdoor jazz performance by Reginald Chapman and Pressure fit. 1:30 pm | Outdoor reading by Nabil Ayers, author of My Life in the Sunshine: Searching for my Father and Discovering my Family, sponsored by Pygmalion Festival. 3 pm | Join us for an Artists Panel Discussion with Patrick Earl Hammie, Stacey Robinson, Blair Ebony Smith, and Nekita Thomas. About the Exhibition Black on Black on Black on Black is an exhibition with interactive programming, co-created by the Black faculty at the School of Art & Design, that draws from lived experiences and Black speculation, featuring works across visual art and design, socially engaged practice, video, movement, and music. This exhibition and programming invites us to experience, explore, and reflect on Black identity, history, collectivity, healing, innovation, education, struggle, and joy. The exhibition will feature Black faculty in the School of Art & Design through the lens of the Black Quantum Future as proposed by Philadelphia-based activists and theorists Rasheeda Phillips and Camae Ayewa. The collaborative exhibition will explore Black identity, collectivity, positionality, healing, innovation, and education as explored via a multi-leveled/multi-dimensional immersive, critical, and openly reflective space. This re-visioning of the Faculty Exhibition recognizes the legacy of Black knowledge and production in ways that supports the ongoing efforts by the School of Art & Design, Krannert Art Museum, College of Fine and Applied Arts, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign towards addressing and celebrating our unique diversity, equity, and inclusion. A lecture series, community conversations, sound installation, and a catalogue is planned in conjunction with the exhibition.

    Deana McDonagh, Graphic Design Program Chair, Industrial Design Professor, and Beckman Institute researcher, co-directs the (dis)Ability Design Studio with Adam Bleakney, research affiliate in Beckman and DRES, head coach of the UIUC men and women’s wheelchair track and road-racing team, and coach for the U.S. Paralympic Team. This is the first design studio at the Beckman Institute and showcases the value of human centered design and how instrumental it has been in collaborating with DRES. The (Dis)Ability Design Studio is located on the first floor of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at 405 N.     Graphic Design Chair and Industrial Design Professor, Deana McDonagh recently joined the Carle Illinois as a Health Innovation Faculty member. Ten faculty members from across the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus are bringing expertise in a broad range of disciplines to Carle Illinois College of Medicine as the latest group of Health Innovation Professors (HIP). The new HIP faculty will champion Carle Illinois’ interdisciplinary approach that leverages expertise from across the UIUC campus to lead advancements in the medical field and improve the human condition. The new faculty join from The Grainger College of Engineering, the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences(ACES),  College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS), College of Education, the College of Fine and Applied Arts, the School of Information Sciences, and Gies College of Business. Health Innovation Professors are positioned to collaborate with Carle Illinois students, physicians, and other health care providers to pursue new frontiers in health-related research and innovation, creating new opportunities for funding from government agencies, industry, and foundations. The new faculty members will also pioneer advancements in medical education and the integration of health-related concepts into undergraduate and graduate courses across the UIUC campus. “This is our largest cohort of Health Innovation Professor faculty to date, and we are thrilled by the breadth of expertise and experiences they will bring to our college,” said Stephen Boppart, Carle Illinois’ Executive Associate Dean and Chief Diversity Officer. “Our selected Health Innovation Professor faculty members will serve as change agents that both reflect their individual disciplines yet come together to focus on the future of medicine and educating future physician-innovators.” For more information, please visit https://medicine.illinois.edu/news/cross-disciplinary-researchers-join-carle-illinois-as-health-innovation-faculty
