NewsProfessor Deana McDonagh wins the Beckman Institute Vision and Spirit Award. The award, which includes $150,000 in research funding, was created to honor Beckman Institute Founder Arnold Beckman by recognizing a faculty member who has fostered collaboration in their research and exemplifies his vision. Beckman and his wife, Mabel, gave $40 million to the University of Illinois in the 1980s to create the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. NewsThe pedagogy of discomfort: Transformational Experiential Learning International Journal of Design for Social Change, Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Vol. 2 No. 2 (2021): Autumn This paper focuses on the value of transformative pedagogy in working through discomfort when learning about limit-situations, developing a foundation for transformative pedagogy in a course setting, the importance of critical thinking in transformative pedagogy, and how transformative pedagogy is presented when the focus is on ethics, disability, and responsible design. By embedding ethics, critical consciousness, and strategic thinking, the process translates into a transformative practice of design and innovation.
